Joins Charlotte's Jersey Recognition Program
Tar Heel head men's golf coach Andrew DiBitetto and Jonas Enander Hedin were honored at halftime of the Charlotte 49ers football game on Nov. 17,  becoming the second and third members of the golf team to join the 49ers' Jersey Recognition Program.
The teammates played four years together, made four straight trips to the NCAA Tournament and took home a pair of top-10 NCAA finishes. The duo helped the 49ers to a third-place finish at the 2007 NCAA Championships before tying for eighth as seniors in 2008. The 49ers made the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history in their freshman year of 2005. A year later, the 49ers won their first of three straight Atlantic 10 championships and placed 22nd at the 2006 NCAA Championship. Â
"Saturday was a special day and a special honor," says DiBitetto. "It was incredible to receive this honor with Jonas, who is one of my best friends after being classmates and teammates for four years. This was an opportunity for former coaches and teammates to come together again for the first time in many years. It was great to reflect on the relationships we built and what we were able to accomplish as a group. It was the most competitive team I've ever been a part of and we were determined to put Charlotte Golf on the map and do things that had never been done before. Jonas and I are fortunate to be honored, but everything we accomplished was a complete group effort – teammates, coaches, strength coaches, academic advisors and administrators – all whom I still keep in touch with. Honoring us in this way was a classy move by Coach Cabbage and the 49er athletic department and is something I will always remember and appreciate."
DiBitetto paced the 49ers to their third-place finish in the 2007 NCAA Tournament by placing ninth individually at 2 under par. That is the second-best individual finish ever by a 49ers golfer and earned him All-America honors. He had three top-five individual finishes in conference play, including runner-up in 2007. In 2005, he was named team MVP and took home C-USA All-Freshman honors. The 2007 A-10 Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year also won back-to-back GCAA Scholar All-America awards and a 2007 GCAA/Ping All-America honor. His career stroke average of 73.04 is still tied for eighth all-time in 49er history.
DiBitetto is is in his second season as head coach of the Tar Heels. He was UNC's top assistant coach the previous six seasons.
