Gerard Leads UNC to Fourth in San Diego

Austin Hitt Posts Career-Best 6-Under Finish
Oklahoma State shot 21-under-par in the final round and placed three individuals in the top four to win the Lamkin San Diego Classic on Tuesday at the San Diego Country Club.
North Carolina tied for fourth place after a third round 293, five strokes over par. Freshman Ryan Gerard led the Tar Heels with an even-par 72 today and finished tied for 18th at even-par 216 for the tournament.
Tar Heel sophomore Austin Hitt, playing as an individual entry, shot a 71 in the final round to tie for sixth in the individual standings at a career-best 6-under 210. Hitt tied his best finish in a collegiate tournament (also sixth this year at the Wolfpack Collegiate at NC State.
Texas Tech's Fredrik Nilehn won medalist honors by two shots. He shot 69-66-66 to finish at 15-under. Oklahoma State's Viktor Hovland (-13), Matthew Wolf (-12) and Zach Bauchou (-10) were second through fourth, respectively.
The Cowboys shot 270-283-267 for a 44-under-820 total, winning the event by 32 strokes over Texas Tech. Arizona was third (-4) and Carolina tied Ole Miss at plus-one.
For the Tar Heels, Gerard was 18th, Jose Montaño tied for 22nd at 217 (+1), William Register and Ben Griffin tied for 32nd at 219 (+3) and Joshua Martin tied for 44th at 221 (+5).
Carolina returns to competition on March 18-19 at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational in Ponte Vedra, Fla.
