Tar Heels One Off the Pace at John Hayt Collegiate
Brandon Mancheno shot a 5-under-67 and Auburn shot 13 under par to edge the University of North Carolina by a single stroke to win the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational Monday at the Sawgrass Country Club.
The Tar Heels held a two-stroke lead over Jacksonville and were eight shots better than Auburn heading into today's third and final round. Carolina shot 4 under today with two sub-par rounds and an even-par score, but the Tigers posted a 67 and two 69s to make up nine shots for the win.
Senior Ben Griffin led UNC Monday with a 4-under-68 and finished tied for sixth place at 212. Freshman Ryan Gerard shot a 71 and also tied for sixth.
Sophomore Austin Hitt, who shot 66 in the second round, was 1 over today and finished in a tie for 14th place at 1. Seniors Jose Montaño shot even par in the third round and tied for 20th at 217 (+1); and William Register shot 73 and finished 4 over.
"We played well today but Auburn played great and clipped us by one. Hats off to them on an excellent final round
"College golf is amazing," says UNC head coach Andrew DiBitetto. "Five guys play hundreds of shots over 54 holes, but every one of those shots counts. It stings to lose by one, but Coach (Matt) Clark and I like where our team is at. We have a lot of guys playing well and we keep getting better."
Auburn (-12), Carolina (-11) and Liberty (-3) were the only teams in the 15-team field to finish the 54-hole tournament under par.
Brian Carlson of Purdue shot 67-70-70–207 to win medalist honors by a stroke.
Tar Heel junior Josh Martin competed as an individual and shot his second consecutive 69. He finished tied for eighth at 3 under.
The Tar Heels return to action on April 7-8 at the Western Intercollegiate in Santa Cruz, Calif.
