Carolina Tops Georgia Tech in the Series Opener
April 20, 2018 | Softball
ATLANTA – Despite Georgia Tech scoring first, a four-run fourth inning clinched the 4-2 win for Carolina in the series opener over the Yellow Jackets in Atlanta on Friday night.
Brittany Pickett tossed six strikeouts in her third complete game of the week to improve to 25-9 on the season. Megan Dray led Carolina's offense with her two-run double in the fourth while Leah Murray went 2-for-3. With the win, the Tar Heels improve to 27-21 and 14-5 in ACC play.
Georgia Tech's No. 2 hitter, Cameron Stanford led the Yellow Jackets with a 2-for-3, including a home run in the sixth. However, it was not enough as Tech falls to 23-21 on the season and an even 8-8 league record.
Despite a leadoff strikeout by Pickett for her third of the day, an RBI-double by Kelsey Chisholm gave Georgia Tech a 1-0 lead in the second.
After three scoreless innings for Carolina, the Tar Heels plated four in the fourth which would ultimately be enough for the win. Kiani Ramsey made a diving play in center before coming up at the plate with a leadoff single in the fourth. A walk and a Kristina Burkhardt single loaded the bases with one out before Sierra Parkinson took the pitch in her elbow guard to knot the game at one. Dray dropped a two-run double in right before Katelyn Shifflett finalized the inning's scoring on an RBI-sac-bunt.
Georgia Tech's Stanford homered in the sixth, cutting into Carolina's lead, 4-2.
Destiny DeBerry and Murray logged back-to-back singles in the seventh, but could not come around to score. However, a strikeout and two ground-outs in the bottom of the frame secured the win for Carolina.
Carolina and Georgia Tech resume the series Saturday at 1 p.m.
