DURHAM, North Carolina - Top ranked North Carolina dropped a 5-2 decision at No. 4 Duke on Friday night in an Atlantic Coast Conference women's tennis match from Ambler Tennis Center.
North Carolina (22-3, 11-2 ACC) earned the doubles point in a lengthy battle that was won on a Jessie Aney ace to win the tiebreaker on court one. The No. 1 ranked tandem of Aney and Alexa Graham improved to 25-5 on the year with the 7-6 victory.
Marika Akkerman and Makenna Jones also picked up a 6-4 doubles win on court three.
The momentum from the thrilling doubles win did not carry over into singles for the Tar Heels, who had its five-match winning streak over the Blue Devils snapped on a cool evening in Durham.
Duke (20-2, 12-1) won in straight sets on courts two, four and five, and later took three-set victories on court six to clinch the match, and on court three, pinning No. 83 Graham with her first loss of the spring.
Carolina's No. 11 Jones and Duke's No. 4 Samantha Harris treated the crowd to one of the best matches played all season long on court one. Jones won the opening set, 7-5, before Harris roared back to take the second, 6-1. The third set went to a tiebreaker to push the match past the four-hour mark, and Jones stood tall in taking the tiebreaker by a 7-4 margin.
Jones remains unbeaten in ACC play this spring.
UNC will honor its three seniors - Marika Akkerman, Maggie Kane and Cassandra Vazquez - on Sunday against Pitt in the regular season finale at 1 p.m.
