CHAPEL HILL - University of North Carolina senior Bryana Nguyen was honored with the UNC athletic department's Mildred McCaskill award Monday and with the University's Jim Tatum Memorial Award Tuesday for her accomplishments on and off the golf course while at Carolina.
The McCaskill award is given annually to seniors and signifies outstanding performance in athletics, academics and service. This year's recipients were Nguyen (women's golf), Morgan Lane (gymnastics), Austin Proehl (football) and William Register (men's golf).
The Jim Tatum Memorial Award was established in 1959 in honor of James M. Tatum, head football coach in 1942 and 1956 through 1958. It is presented under the sponsorship of The University of North Carolina Athletic Association to the varsity intercollegiate athlete who has performed with distinction in his or her sport and who has contributed to the University community through constructive participation in co-curricular activities.
Bryana Nguyen is a senior broadcast journalism major in the School of Media & Journalism. As a four-year member of the UNC women's golf team, Nguyen has played in over 40 tournaments and 130 rounds during her career as a Tar Heel, playing as a member of the team's starting five in all but one of those tournaments. She has a career 75.48 stroke average, has finished under par 14 times in her career and has scored a career-low 68 four times. As a junior, Nguyen had one of the best tournaments for a Tar Heel in UNC history, finishing at 7-under-par 209 in the 2017 Bryan National Collegiate for one of her two top-five career finishes, taking second. She also finished fifth at the 2018 Briar's Creek Invitational this season, helping her team to the 45th tournament title in program history.
Nguyen has played in the ACC Championship each year, garnering two top-15 finishes - she finished tied for eighth as a junior at even-par 216. Nguyen has also helped the Tar Heels to three appearances in NCAA regionals and two-consecutive trips to the NCAA Championship. Nguyen was particularly pivotal in the 2017 Athens regional, shooting a 1-under-par 71 in the final round to help complete Carolina's 11-shot comeback and send them to the sport's final weekend.
As a senior, Nguyen is the co-president of UNC's student-athlete advisory council and has been a participant in the Carolina Leadership Academy's Rising Stars, Creed Mentor and Veteran Leaders programs. Additionally, Nguyen was named to the All-ACC Academic Team as a junior and has been a member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll for the last two years.
