Carolina Pushes Past Bulldogs In NCAA 2nd Round
May 12, 2018 | Women's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL - No. 2 seed North Carolina delivered another clutch performance in the NCAA Women's Tennis Championship on Saturday with a 4-0 shutout of Mississippi State in a second round match from Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
Carolina (28-3) advances to the NCAA Championship Round of 16 for the ninth-straight season, and will face 15th seed Stanford on Thursday in Winston-Salem, North Carolina at 12 p.m.
UNC played an efficient doubles match, winning first on court one with No. 2 Jessie Aney and Alexa Graham picking up a 6-2 victory. Moments later, Marika Akkerman and Makenna Jones secured the opening point on court three with a 6-3 win.
The Tar Heels continued their momentum into singles by winning the first set in five of the six matches.
No. 26 Alle Sanford played well on court two in notching the first singles victory of the day, 6-1, 6-2, over Janina Braun.
Minutes later, No. 2 Jones quickly made it 3-0 Tar Heels after a 6-2, 6-0, win over Madison Harrison on court one. Jones improves to 12-0 at No. 1 singles and extends her winning streak to 17-consecutive matches dating back to early March.
The fourth and final point took much longer to secure with the Bulldogs pushing two matches to a third set and owning the lead on court three.
However, the 3-0 deficit proved to much to overcome as No. 95 Alexa Graham won the match clinching point on court four. Her opponent, Magda Adaloglou, double faulted to end the afternoon's festivities in favor of the Tar Heels.
Carolina has not lost an NCAA second round match since 2009.
