Daavettila/Sanford Reach NCAA Doubles 2nd Round

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Sara Daavettila and Alle Sanford picked up a victory on Thursday in the opening round of the NCAA Doubles Championship at the Wake Forest Tennis Center.Â
Listed as the first alternate in the event, Daavettila and Sanford were added to the 32-team doubles field when Duke's Kelly Chen and Samantha Harris were a late scratch on Thursday morning.Â
The Tar Heel tandem defeated Texas Tech's Sarah Dvorak and Sabrina Federici, 6-2, 6-4.Â
They will face Georgia's Mariana Gould and Katarina Jokic in the Round of 16 on Friday at 12:30 p.m.
Carolina's No. 2 seeded duo of Jessie Aney and Alexa Graham came out on the wrong side of a 6-2, 6-4, outcome against Vanderbilt's Astra Sharma and Fernanda Contreras. UNC's top doubles team this season finishes the year with a 27-11 overall record.Â
In singles, No. 2 seed Makenna Jones fell to Chen in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, in a second round match Thursday morning. The loss snapped an 18-match winning streak for the first-team All-ACC performer. Jones wraps up her season with a 35-5 overall singles record, marking the fourth most victories in program history by a sophomore.
