CHAPEL HILL—Atlantic Coast Conference champion North Carolina (15-3) has earned the No. 2 seed in the 2018 NCAA Tournament, the NCAA announced on Sunday night with the release of its 27-team field.
Carolina, an automatic qualifier as the ACC champion, will host NCAA games on Friday May 11 and Sunday May 13 at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh. UNC is ranked No. 1 in the most recent NCAA Women's Lacrosse RPI ratings.
The Tar Heels' longtime home stadium, Fetzer Field, is under renovation this year and will reopen in 2019. Carolina played its 2018 home games at Kenan Stadium, home of the UNC football team, but that facility is not available next weekend due to commencement exercises.
"We are excited to compete in an extremely competitive NCAA Tournament," Tar Heel head coach Jenny Levy said on Sunday night. "I am glad we were rewarded for our body of work, and I am confident that we are battle-tested and ready for the challenge ahead."
Virginia Tech and Georgetown will meet in the first round on Friday at 3 p.m. in Raleigh. The winner will advance to play UNC in the second round on Sunday at 1 p.m. Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for seniors and students with ID cards and $2 for children under 12
The Tar Heels enter the NCAA Tournament with a 15-3 record, including a 6-1 ACC mark. Carolina won its third consecutive ACC Tournament last weekend, beating Syracuse, Virginia Tech and Boston College to sweep to the title.
The Tar Heels earn an NCAA Tournament bid for the 13th year in a row and the 19th time overall. Carolina has won the NCAA championship twice in the last five years (2013, 2016). Head coach Jenny Levy's 30 NCAA Tournament wins rank fourth in NCAA history.
UNC is a top-five seed for the 10th year in a row. Carolina is making its 20th NCAA Tournament appearance in 23 years as a varsity program. The Tar Heels are 30-17 in NCAA Tournament games and have made nine semifinal appearances (1997, 1998, 2002, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016), including six in the last nine years.
Maryland is the No. 1 overall seed, followed by No. 2 seed UNC and No. 3 seed James Madison. Boston College is the No. 4 seed, Stony Brook is No. 5, Florida is No. 6, Towson is No. 7 and Loyola is No. 8.
ACC schools Virginia Tech, Syracuse and Virginia made the field as unseeded teams.
The NCAA semifinals and final will be played on May 25 and 27 in Stony Brook, N.Y.
