Wiltrout Throws For Third at USATF Junior Outdoor Championships
June 16, 2018 | Track & Field
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Redshirt-freshman Madison Wiltrout made her comeback appearance on Friday, June 15th at the USATF 2018 Junior Outdoor Championships hosted by Indiana University in the Hayes Track at the Hague Complex, finishing third after throwing 173-5 (52.86m) in her final throw of the women's javelin competition. Wiltrout now ranks fifth all-time in the women's javelin throw at UNC.
The two-time Pennsylvania Gatorade Player of the Year threw 161-9 (49.30m) in her opening throw to start off in third and she regained the third-place spot after dropping to fourth in the third round. Wiltrout also finished third in javelin at last year's USATF Junior Outdoor Championships.
Though unable to compete for Carolina in her first academic year, Wiltrout showed great potential throughout her high school career. She was the 2017 New Balance Nationals Champion in javelin, a three-time All-America, and the 2017 Penn Relays javelin champion. Holding a personal best of 185-8 (56.59m), Wiltrout set the national high school javelin record, the Pennsylvania state javelin record, and the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) javelin record.
For reference, had Wiltrout competed at the 2018 NCAATF Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore. with her Junior Championship throw of 173-5, she would have earned seventh place accolades and All-America honors. Wiltrout's personal best would have finished third overall among the four other personal records that took home the top spots in the women's NCAA Outdoor Championship javelin competition.
