Cunningham To Serve On USOC Collegiate Advisory Council
September 11, 2018 | General
CHAPEL HILL—University of North Carolina Director of Athletics Lawrence R. "Bubba" Cunningham has accepted an invitation to serve on the United States Olympic Committee's Collegiate Advisory Council, a 10-member group of college leaders committed to aligning, advocating and advancing national engagement and support of Olympic sport opportunities at the collegiate level.
Â
Cunningham, who is in his 17th year as a Division I Director of Athletics, has spent the last seven years guiding the broad-based athletics program at UNC, which supports 28 sports and nearly 800 student-athletes.Â
Â
"The leaders who make up CAC share a strong commitment to providing as many opportunities as possible for students – and that includes Olympic opportunities,'' Cunningham said. "I appreciate the opportunity to join this group and look forward to helping find more ways that the NCAA and USOC can work together to improve our students' success and experience."
Â
The CAC was formed in 2017 and is comprised of collegiate administrators who have personally advocated for broad-based Olympic sport programming at the collegiate level and represent institutions that have historically contributed to Team USA's success at the Olympic Games.
Â
Nearly 80 percent of 2016 U.S. Olympians – and 85 percent of American medalists – had collegiate ties. In 2016, Carolina had 17 athletes representing four countries in the Olympics.
Â
Cunningham is past president of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA); sits on the board of LEAD1, an association representing the ADs from the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) schools; is in his eighth year on the ACC Television Committee; and has served on many NCAA committees over the last two decades.
Â
Ten Carolina teams have won national titles during his tenure in Chapel Hill, and more than 300 student-athletes have made the ACC Academic Honor roll -- which requires a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better for the year – each of the past six years.
