September 11, 2018 | Women's Tennis
TEMPE, Arizona - The North Carolina women's tennis team is well represented in the Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis Preseason National Rankings released on Tuesday. The Tar Heels feature six singles players, two doubles teams and one newcomer included in the first rankings release of the 2018-19 campaign.
Junior All-America Makenna Jones checks in No. 2 as the highest ranked singles player in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The UNC rankings continued with sophomore Alle Sanford (No. 19), junior Sara Daavettila (No. 27), senior Jessie Aney (No. 58), junior Alexa Graham (No. 60) and senior Chloe Ouellet-Pizer (No. 82).
Aney and Graham are No. 2 in the doubles rankings, while Sanford and Daavettila come in No. 10. All four doubles players were All-America selections last season.
Freshman Cameron Morra is No. 6 in the newcomers top-10.
UNC was scheduled to open its fall season this weekend, but Hurricane Florence has forced both events in Cary, N.C., and Williamsburg, Va., to be cancelled.Â
Jones is entered to play in the Oracle ITA Masters Sept. 20-23 in Malibu, Calif. Sanford is the defending champion after winning one of the premier college tennis tournaments of the season last year as a freshman.Â
Most of the team will compete next weekend at the Furman Invitational in Greenville, S.C.
