Zhou Leads Way, Tar Heels in Seventh after First Round of Mason Rudolph Championship

FRANKLIN, TENN. – Freshman Jennifer Zhou led the way for the Tar Heels' women's golf team on day one of the Mason Rudolph Championship. As a team, Carolina in seventh place after the first round at the par-72 6,450-yard Vanderbilt Legends Club.
Zhou put up her lowest collegiate score with a 5-under-par 67. Individually, she is tied for second overall and only one shot off the lead. The freshman carded nine birdies during her round, and her 5-under-par performance puts her in a tie for sixth lowest score to par and eighth lowest by strokes ever by a Tar Heel. She also shot six birdies during a bogey-free back nine.
In addition to Zhou, the Tar Heels posted a solid round to sit in seventh. Senior Kelly Whaley finished with an even-par 72 with a very steady round featuring one birdie and one bogey in each nine.
Nicole Lu finished her round at 2-over-par, but managed to card three birdies on the day.
Brynn Walker had a bit of an up-and-down round with four birdies, seven bogeys and double bogey to finish with a 5-over 77. Ava Bergner had slow start to the weekend, shooting 8-over-par.
Mariana Ocano is competing for the first time this season as an individual and put together a steady round. Ocano carded a 3-under 69 and is tied for sixth place overall.
After the first round, everybody is chasing host Vanderbilt at 10-under-par.
The second round begins tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. ET (8:30 a.m. CT).
