The North Carolina men's and women's fencing teams went a perfect 8-0 Saturday at the Philadelphia Invitational, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania. Competing at the Coach Dave Micahnik Fencing Center on Penn campus in Philadelphia, the Tar Heels beat Brown, Haverford, NYU and Sacred Heart.
The Tar Heel women opened the day with a 19-8 win over Sacred Heart, then beat NYU 21-6, Haverford 22-5 and Brown 21-6.
The men also opened with a win over Sacred Heart, 21-6, then pulled out a close contest against NYU, which was ranked No. 10 nationally at the end of last season. The Tar Heels won that one 14-13, with the foil squad leading the way with a 6-3 mark.
Carolina then continued with an 18-9 win over Haverford and a 21-6 victory against Brown.
The Tar Heels planned to compete Sunday as well, but cut the trip short in order to avoid incoming snowy weather on the bus trip home.
UNC is off next weekend then travels to the Northwestern Duals on Feb. 2 and 3 in Evanston, Ill.
