Tar Heels Picked Third in Preseason ACC Softball Coaches Poll

Pickett, Ramsey Named to Preseason All-ACC Team
GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina, the favorite to win the Coastal Division, has been selected third in the 2019 Atlantic Coast Conference preseason softball coaches poll, as voted on by the ACC head coaches and released Tuesday by the league office. Additionally, Brittany Pickett and Kiani Ramsey have been named to the preseason all-ACC team.

North Carolina finished the 2018 regular season third, behind Florida State and Pitt. Reigning Women's College World Series champion, Florida State is the ACC favorite heading into 2019, receiving 121 points and 11 first-place votes. Notre Dame came in just ahead of UNC with 102 points while Carolina picked up 95. Pitt and Louisville round out the top five with 88 and 75 points, respectively.

Pickett, a pitcher from Indian Trail, North Carolina, garnered all-ACC first team and all-tournament team honors for the second consecutive year in 2018. Pickett anchored Carolina's pitching staff, making 37 starts and appearing in 51 of 55 games. She also hit .313, slugging a team-best .663 with 13 hits for extra bases. The junior led the nation with 299.2 innings pitched and shutout her opponents 10 times to lead the ACC and rank 14th nationally. Pickett led the ACC in appearances, ranking second in the nation.

Ramsey, an outfielder from Portland, Texas, was named an All-ACC and NFC All-Southeast region second-team honoree in 2018. She started 52 games while playing in 55. The senior led the Tar Heels with a .374 average with 58 hits, including six extra-base hits.

Florida State has five preseason selections while North Carolina ties with Syracuse and Louisville for the second-most with two apiece.

The Tar Heels begin their 2019 season at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge Feb. 8-10 in Puerta Vallarta, Mexico. Carolina will take on four 2018 NCAA Tournament teams, including Baylor, BYU, South Carolina and Women's College World Series Runner-Up, Washington.
