Carolina Wrestling Announces 2019-20 Schedule
October 1, 2019 | Wrestling
CHAPEL HILL --- The University of North Carolina wrestling team will host seven home duals in Carmichael Arena this season and will face six teams that finished within the top 20 of last year's NCAA Championships.
Â
The 2019-20 schedule, which was announced Tuesday, boasts a series of strong non-conference opponents to kick off the season before beginning ACC competition in late January.
Â
UNC will open the season at the Hokie Open tournament on November 3. This continues the tradition of traveling to Virginia to kick off the season, which the Tar Heels have done every year in the Coleman Scott era.
Â
Carolina will open up its dual-meet schedule on November 8, traveling to Ann Arbor to take on the University of Michigan. This will be the first meeting between the Tar Heels and Wolverines since the 1993-94 season. Last year, Michigan posted a fifth-place finish at NCAAs.
Â
The next weekend, UNC will make a trip out west to visit Stanford. Last season, the Cardinal put two wrestlers in the Round of 12 after posting a 9-4 dual meet record and knocking off four teams ranked within the top-20.
Â
The Tar Heels will then return home to Chapel Hill for a pair of dual meets against Chattanooga (Nov. 24) and Appalachian State (Dec. 1). UNC defeated both schools on the road last season.
Â
After a weekend off, the team will visit Little Rock and former assistant coach Neil Erisman in his program's inaugural season in Arkansas (Dec. 20).
Â
Over winter break, the Tar Heels will travel to the Midlands Championships as a team (Dec. 29-30) before heading to West Point for the Army Duals against Army, American and Wyoming (Jan. 4).
Â
On January 10, UNC will play host to the Princeton Tigers for a Friday night home dual.
Â
Carolina will open up its conference schedule in Blacksburg against Virginia Tech on January 25. Last season, the Tar Heels pulled off an upset against the Hokies at home, 18-14.
Â
The next weekend, UNC returns home for back-to-back duals in Carmichael Arena against Duke (Jan. 31) and Bucknell (Feb. 1) before the team's visit to Reynolds Coliseum at N.C. State on February 7.
Â
The regular season will wrap up with home duals against Pittsburgh (Feb. 14) and Arizona State (Feb. 23) and road duals against Cornell (Feb. 16) and Virginia (Feb. 21).
Â
The 2020 ACC Wrestling Championships will take place in Pittsburgh on Sunday, March 8. Two weeks later, the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships will be in Minneapolis, Minnesota, at U.S. Bank Stadium on March 19-21.
