October 12, 2019 | Women's Golf
CHAPEL HILL - The North Carolina women's golf team is in sixth place after combining for a team score of 3-under-par 285 in the second round of the 44th annual Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational at UNC Finley Golf Course. The Tar Heels were led by Jennifer Zhou's 3-under-par 69, which places her in a tie for eighth and two strokes behind the leader entering the final round.
Zhou's second round was filled with six birdies, including five in the first nine holes. Her performance marks the third time in her collegiate career that she has recorded a sub-70 round, with her lowest round of 67 coming from the 2018 Mason Rudolph Championship.
Following close behind, freshman Kayla Smith tied her collegiate career low with a 2-under-par 70 in the second round. Making the turn, Smith started off with a bogey, her second in as many holes. However, she would quickly erase the strokes lost with five birdies in her final eight holes. Smith is tied for 23rd with one round to go.
With the Tar Heels' third under-par round, freshman Krista Junkkari carded a 1-under-par 71, her second-lowest collegiate round to date.
Junior Ava Bergner notched a 3-over-par 75 and sophomore Nicole Lu tallied a 4-over-par 76.
Competing as individuals, Aleks Golde and Mariana Ocano both shot an 8-over-par 80.
The University of Kentucky leads the tournament at 15-under-par, one stroke better than Wake Forest University, who is in second place.
The third and final round of the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational will begin with a shotgun start at 9:15 a.m. at UNC Finley Golf Course on Sunday.
