Carolina Gymnastics Announces 2020 Schedule
November 7, 2019 | Women's Gymnastics
CHAPEL HILL — The University of North Carolina gymnastics team released its schedule for the 2020 season on Thursday, approximately two months before its home opener. Carolina will host four home meets and hit the road for seven meets with the 2020 season culminating back in Chapel Hill for the EAGL Championships in March.
"We are eagerly looking forward to the competition season," head coach Derek Galvin said. "We have four regular season home meets during the months of January and February, and we are also very excited about hosting the 2020 East Atlantic Gymnastics League Championships."
To start the season, Carolina will host the College of William & Mary on January 12. The Tar Heels defeated William & Mary in their only match-up last season.
The following weekend, January 17, North Carolina will travel to the University of Kentucky. This quad-meet will also feature Kentucky, Lindenwood and NC State.
"We will be facing a very strong SEC opponent when we travel to Kentucky," Galvin stated. "Kentucky is coming off a very successful 2019 season that saw them post one of their best years ever."
EAGL meets begin on January 25 as North Carolina and Pittsburgh will face off in Chapel Hill. Pittsburgh finished fourth in the EAGL Championship in 2019, just one place ahead of North Carolina.
The following weekend the Tar Heels begin a series of road trips, starting with a short trip to NC State on February 1 for another EAGL meet. The Wolfpack finished third in the 2019 EAGL Championship, and this competition will mark the second of three meetings in 2020 for the two teams.
Another EAGL meet will take place the next weekend as North Carolina will travel to Towson University on February 7. Carolina defeated Towson in the regular season and in the EAGL Championship during 2019.
Next, the Tar Heels will return to NC State for a Tri-meet with the University of New Hampshire the following weekend. This will be the first of three consecutive match-ups between North Carolina and the reigning EAGL Champions.
The next competition between North Carolina and New Hampshire will take place that next Monday evening, February 17, in Chapel Hill before the teams face off in New Hampshire the following Sunday.
North Carolina's final EAGL meet of the season will take place in Chapel Hill the next weekend as the Tar Heels host George Washington University. George Washington finished second in the EAGL Championship in 2019, but North Carolina defeated them during the regular season.
To close out the season, Carolina will travel to Ball State University on March 8 before finishing up with a multi-team meet at the University of Maryland on March 15.
"A multi-team meet featuring several EAGL teams at the University of Maryland will be a great prelude to the EAGL Championship meet," stated Galvin. "The EAGL conference will be competitive across the board in 2020 and the Tar Heel gymnasts will have a great opportunity to test themselves against their EAGL opponents throughout the regular season, leading up to the EAGL Championships on March 21."
North Carolina has a great opportunity to expand upon the growth they made last year with the schedule drawn out for this season. It should be a great season of fun and competition for Carolina gymnasts, coaches, and fans alike.
