December 28, 2019 | Wrestling
CHAPEL HILL --- Head coach Coleman Scott announced Saturday that Gary Wayne Harding has joined the North Carolina wrestling staff as an assistant coach.
Harding was an NCAA qualifier for the Tar Heels last season and played a crucial role in the team's 2019-20 ACC regular season championship. Before transferring to Carolina prior to last season, Harding spent four years at Oklahoma State.
"This is an addition that makes us better both on and off the mat," head coach Coleman Scott said. "Gary has a great connection with all the guys in our room and fits the Tar Heel mentality for the culture we have here. He's skilled on the mat and knows the ins and outs of the wrestling community. He's exactly the type of person we want around every day."
Harding went 27-13 with UNC last season, going 10-5 in dual meets and 4-1 in ACC competition. His win over Virginia Tech's No. 12 Korbin Myers helped UNC to an upset win over the Hokies.
The Collinsville, Oklahoma native was a two-time NCAA qualifier at Oklahoma State. A Collinsville High School native, Harding was a four-time 5A Oklahoma High School state champion, compiling a 166-14 record.
