Carolina Adds Top-Ranked Santiago To Recruiting Class
December 6, 2019 | Wrestling
CHAPEL HILL --- Head wrestling coach Coleman Scott announced Friday that the University of North Carolina has added Sonny Santiago to this year's signing class. Santiago is currently wrestling in his senior season at St. John Bosco High School (Bellflower, Calif.) and is ranked No. 1 at 152 pounds in Flo Wrestling's high school rankings.
"Sonny and his family fit Carolina really well and I knew as soon as I met him that he's the type of guy we want to see in Chapel Hill," Scott said. "His talent, hard work and determination all add up to being a Tar Heel type of wrestler. I think fans are going to be extremely excited about seeing what Sonny can bring to the table."
In October, Santiago solidified his top-ranked spot with a win over No. 2 Travis Mastrogiovanni at Who's #1's 152-pound match.
"He's going to be a huge addition to our room," associate head coach Tony Ramos said. "Sonny is going to push our guys, and our guys are going to push Sonny. It's a win-win across the board. He's a winner and now he's coming to a place where we're building winners into All-Americans and national champs."
