Palmer Leads Trio of ACC Qualifiers at VT Elite Meet
February 1, 2019 | Track & Field
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. / BLACKSBURG, Va. — Sophomore Isaiah Palmer led a trio of ACC qualifiers on the first day of the Virginia Tech 'Doc Hale' Elite Meet in Blacksburg, Va. A native of Plano, Texas, Palmer qualified for his second ACC Indoor Championship event, clocking a personal-best 400 time of 46.86 for the runner-up finish on Friday. Palmer ran 21.96 (21.53 converted) in the men's 200 at the Dick Taylor Carolina Cup earlier this season to first punch his ticket to the conference indoor meet.
Dontavian Smith, a sophomore from Roxboro, N.C., also qualified for his second ACC Indoor event in Blacksburg, Va. The sprinter narrowly missed the mark in the 60 preliminaries, but he crossed the final finish line in 6.86 to secure another ACC appearance. Smith already secured a conference big at the Gamecock Inaugural in Columbia, S.C. where he ran a qualifying 200 time of 21.61.
Headlining the women's performances at Virginia Tech, junior McKinley McNeill hit the Tar Heel's 20th ACC qualifying mark of the season. The Winston-Salem, N.C. native ran a huge season-best 54.78 in the women's 400.
All three are scheduled to make appearances in Saturday's track events. Smith competes in the men's 200 and later joins Palmer for the men's 4x400 while McNeill is listed on the women's 4x400 lineup.
