March 12, 2019 | Women's Tennis
GREENSBORO, N.C. – North Carolina's Jessie Aney has been named ACC Women's Tennis Player of the Week for her effort on the court last week in a pair of victories over ranked teams.
UNC has been named the league's player of the week five of the last six weeks as teammate Alexa Graham picked up the award four times already in 2019. Meanwhile, Cameron Morra has been the ACC's top freshman on three occasions.
Aney picked up the clinching point in last Wednesday's 4-1 victory over No. 3 Duke. The top ranked Tar Heels (18-1, 6-0 ACC) have defeated the Blue Devils twice this spring and Aney has secured the deciding point in both matches.
Aney and Alexa Graham make up the No. 9 ranked doubles tandem in the nation and they posted two victories last week. First, was a 6-2 win over No. 24 Kaitlyn McCarthy and Ellyse Hamlin of Duke. The second came on the road Friday in the 5-2 win over No. 25 Virginia as the Tar Heels remained unbeaten in doubles thanks to a 7-5 win over No. 58 Chloe Gullickson and Amber O'Dell.
Aney, who hails from Rochester, Minnesota, defeated Virginia's Hunter Bleser, 7-5, 6-0, in five singles.
The win over Bleser was Aney's 119th career singles victory, tying her for fourth all-time in Carolina history with Jenna Long.
