Aney Clinches 5-2 Win At Syracuse
March 29, 2019 | Women's Tennis
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Senior Jessie Aney's clinching victory moved her into fourth place in North Carolina history for most career singles victories, and the Tar Heels remain unbeaten in Atlantic Coast Conference women's tennis action with a 5-2 win over No. 28 Syracuse on Friday afternoon from Drumlins Country Club.Â
North Carolina (21-1, 9-0 ACC) continued its dominance in doubles action, but was pushed to the brink by the Orange. After splitting victories on courts one and two, Carolina's third doubles team of Cameron Morra and Sara Daavettila won in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (3), over Dina Hegab and Guzal Yusupova.Â
No. 9 Sara Daavettila and No. 3 Alexa Graham quickly made it 3-0 in favor of the road team with a pair of straight-set victories at courts three and two, respectively.Â
Hegab picked up a win on court six to avoid the shutout, but Aney closed the door on the Orange (11-7, 4-5) on court five, 6-1, 7-6 (4). Aney's 120th singles win moved her into sole possession of fourth place on the program's wins last, passing former All-America Jenna Long.
No. 25 Morra rallied to win on court four in three sets, before a court one battle went to Syracuse's 40th ranked Gabriela Knutson by scores of 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, over No. 5 Makenna Jones.Â
