UNC Returns To No. 1 In National Rankings
April 24, 2019 | Women's Tennis
Just days removed from a fourth-straight ACC Championship title, the North Carolina women's tennis team moved back to No. 1 in this week's Oracle/ITA Division I rankings. The Tar Heels are riding a 20-match winning streak into the NCAA Team Championship.
Carolina boasts a nation's best 29-1 overall record and owns six more dual match wins than any other team in the country. UNC has been ranked No. 1 on six occasions thus far in the spring.
Junior Makenna Jones moved up two spots to No. 5 this week in the singles rankings. The Greenville, S.C., native picked up a pair of top-15 ranked wins last week over Syracuse's Gabriela Knutson and Duke's Maria Mateas during the run to the conference championship.
Junior Alexa Graham remains No. 7 this week and has not been ranked lower than seventh since early February. She is 32-4 overall this year and ranks third in the ACC with 21 dual wins.
Junior Sara Daavettila checks in at No. 18, while freshman Cameron Morra, the 2019 MVP of the ACC Championship, is No. 45 this week. Senior Jessie Aney, who is tied for the ACC lead with 22 dual wins, is No. 121.
In doubles, Aney and Graham climbed two spots to No. 5, while Morra and Jones are No. 13.
The NCAA Division I women's tennis selection show will air Monday, April 29th at 6:30 p.m. ET on NCAA.com. The Tar Heels expect to be selected as a host for the NCAA Regionals on May 4-5 at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
