April 29, 2019 | Women's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL - ACC champion North Carolina received the No. 2 seed for the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Team Championship and was awarded as a host school for one of 16 on-campus regional sites. This is the third straight season and fourth time in five seasons that the Tar Heels were selected as the No. 2 seed in the 64-team field.
UNC welcome Oklahoma, South Carolina State and Winthrop to Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on Saturday, May 4, and Sunday, May 5, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Carolina (29-1) will face South Carolina State at 1 p.m. on Saturday. That match will follow the first-round meeting between Oklahoma and Winthrop at 10 a.m. The two first-round winners will meet Sunday at 1 p.m., for the right to advance to the NCAA Super Regional round the following weekend. The Tar Heels would host the super regional match on campus if they advance through regional play.
For the 17th time in the last 18 seasons and the 16th time under head coach Brian Kalbas, North Carolina earned a national seed for the team championship. Carolina is making its 21st consecutive appearance in the national tournament and 16th in a row under Kalbas.
The Tar Heels have an all-time NCAA record of 44-20 and have advanced beyond the regional round on 14 occasions, including a run to the 2014 NCAA Championship final and recent elite 8 appearances in 2015 and 2017.
Carolina won its fourth-consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference Championship title with a 4-2 win over Duke on Sunday, April 21. The Tar Heels are ranked No. 1 nationally according to the Oracle/ITA rankings and are currently enjoying a 20-match winning streak leading into NCAA play.
