Three Tar Heels Earn World Team Trials Spots At U.S. Open

LAS VEGAS --- Rising sophomores Jaime Hernandez and Brandon Whitman along with assistant coach Tony Ramos posted top-six finishes to lead the North Carolina wrestling contingent at the 2019 U.S. Open last weekend at the South Point Arena. Those performances mean that each wrestler has qualified for the 2019 World Team Trials, which will be held in Raleigh May 17-19.
Hernandez took fourth place at 61kg and won six matches on the weekend. After three straight dominant performances, Hernandez dropped a competitive 9-4 decision to Roman Bravo-Young (Penn State/Nittany Lion WC) in the quarters. Hernandez then won three more times in the consolation draw before suffering a 6-4 loss in the third-place match to Jevon Parrish (Nebraska).
Whitman followed up his NCAA qualifying freshman campaign with a third-place finish at 92kg. After falling to Lucas Davison (Northwestern/TMWC) in the semis, Whitman rebounded to pick up two more wins, including a 4-2 victory over Joel Shapiro (Iowa State/Cyclone RTC) for third.
Both Hernandez and Whitman will compete for a spot on the world junior team at the UWW Junior Freestyle World Team Trials in Raleigh.
Ramos went 4-3 on the weekend to place sixth in the 61kg senior division, and will compete in the World Team Trials Tournament next month.
Overall on the weekend, all nine current Tar Heels who competed in the junior event won at least one match. Zach Sherman, a 2018 NCAA qualifier who redshirted last season, competed in the senior event.
