GREENSBORO, N.C. – Three Tar Heels have been named to the 2018-19 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling Academic Team, announced on Wednesday by the league. Senior Gary Wayne Harding and freshmen Joe Heilmann and Brandon Whitman were named to the 20-member team, which recognizes both academic and athletic achievement.
Harding, a political science major from Collinsville, Okla., was a national qualifier at 133 pounds during his one season at UNC. After entering the starting lineup, Harding posted a 10-5 record and finished the year with a 27-13 mark and a team-high 17 bonus-point wins. He was honored as the team's Athletic Director's Scholar-Athlete for 2018-19.
Heilmann, from South Plainfield, N.J., has not yet declared a major. The full-time starter at 125 pounds as a true freshman, he finished fourth at the ACC Championships in March.
Whitman, an exercise and sport science major from Dundee, Mich., qualified for the NCAA Championships at 197 pounds as a true freshman. He recently qualified for the U.S. Junior World Team Trials with a third-place finish at the U.S. Open in Las Vegas.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
Duke senior Mitch Finesilver was named the ACC Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
