Morra Reaches NCAA Singles Semifinals
May 23, 2019 | Women's Tennis
ORLANDO - Cameron Morra became the first freshman in the illustrious history of North Carolina women's tennis to reach the semifinals of the NCAA Singles Championship.
Next up for the Rockville, Md., native is the top seed and No. 1 ranked player in the nation Estela Perez-Somarriba of the University of Miami. Tennis Channel will carry the match live starting not before 5 p.m. ET.
The other semifinal features No. 2 seed Katarina Jokic and Duke's No. 21 Kelly Chen, who defeated Morra's teammate Sara Daavettila to end her brilliant postseason run for the Tar Heels.
Morra joins Cinda Gurney (1993), Jamie Loeb (2015) and Hayley Carter (2016) as the only four Tar Heels to ever participate in the semis. Gurney made the finals as a senior, Loeb won the national championship as a sophomore and Carter reached the finals as a junior.
Despite spending nearly five hours on the court yesterday spanning both singles and doubles, Morra appeared fresh in her singles match on Thursday. She won the first two points, gave away the next three, but won the final four points for 6-3 first-set win over senior Felicity Maltby from Texas Tech, the Big 12 Player of the Year.
Maltby fought back to win the second set, but Morra would not be denied in the third to round out a 6-3, 5-7, 6-3, victory.
Chen won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, to snap Daavettila's eight-match winning streak in NCAA postseason play.
Daavettila, the third player in program history to reach the NCAA quarterfinals on two occasions, wraps up her third collegiate season with a 32-8 overall singles record and gained her third career All-America citation.
Morra had to quickly shift her attention to doubles with partner Makenna Jones, who were also in the quarterfinals facing UCLA's third seeded tandem of Gabby Andrews and Ayan Broomfield.
Carolina won the opening set, 6-4, but quickly gave up the second set by a 6-1 margin to setup a third-set super breaker to decide who would reach the semifinals. UNC had an early lead in the breaker only to see the result go to the Bruins, 10-7.
