CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Kevin Nadeau, a Tar Heel graduate and former UNC fencer, has joined the North Carolina fencing staff as an assistant foil coach, head coach Matt Jednak announced Tuesday. Nadeau will work with all aspects of the program, focusing on developing the foil fencers as well as assisting with team operations.
"I'm excited to welcome Kevin to our staff," Jednak said. "He brings a really interesting background and will be an asset to a variety of areas for our program. He has first-hand knowledge of what it takes to succeed at the top level in college fencing while being held to the highest ideals of being a Tar Heel."
Nadeau fenced for the Tar Heels from 2008-12, graduating with a double major in computer science and mathematics. A two-year team captain, he twice advanced to the NCAA Championships and was honored as the 2012 Scholar-Athlete of the Year, an award that goes annually to one male and one female UNC senior student-athlete.
For the past six years Nadeau has worked as a software engineer for HookBang, a start-up in his native Austin, Texas. He also has taught classes and lessons at Texas Fencing Academy, working with all skill levels and ages. Prior to returning to Austin, he served as an assistant coach and facility manager at Mission Fencing Center in Rocky Point, N.Y.
He is a certified official in both epee and foil.
"I'm thrilled to be returning to Carolina," Nadeau said. "Of course, it's a chance to work in one of the most elite athletic departments and finest universities in the nation, and the tradition in the fencing program is incredible. But especially at such an important moment! There's so much talent on this team, and Coach Jednak is bringing in exciting new ideas to help make the most of it. I'm looking forward to a great year and expecting big things."
