2018-19 Top Six for Service Award Winners
August 13, 2019 | Student-Athlete Development
Each year, six individuals or teams from every Atlantic Coast Conference school are honored with the ACC Top Six for Service Award, recognizing outstanding contributions through community service.
UNC six honorees for 2018-19 were announced at the 2019 Rammy Awards. They are:
Toby Song, men's golf: Song served for two years as the team's outreach representative, organizing participation in a variety of events. The men's golf team made visits to UNC Hospitals and to local elementary schools, helped with childcare for the Widowed Parent Program and participated in Hurricane Florence relief projects. Through Song's leadership, the men's golf program has become a leader in service.
Jocelyn Jones, women's basketball: Jones has been involved in many community service activities and events over the past two years. She volunteered with TABLE, the Carolina Campus Community Garden, the UNC Pen Pal Program and at Northside Elementary School, working with a second-grade class. In the fall of 2018 she organized a team visit to the Red Cross Hurricane Relief Center.
Morgan Goetz, field hockey: By displaying commitment to the community, Goetz made a huge impact off the field. Under her leadership, the field hockey team visited patients at UNC Hospitals, cooked meals at the SECU Family House and volunteered in elementary school classrooms. For the past two years, she has served as the point person for her team's Vs. Cancer partnership, raising funds to combat childhood cancers and organizing one game each year as the team's Vs. Cancer game.
Jacob Henkels, men's fencing: Henkels organizes outreach activities for the men's and women's fencing teams, including a weekend trip to Asheville, where the team served at the Haywood Street Homeless Shelter. Individually, he organized two student-athlete platelet drives for the UNC Blood Donation Center.
Leah Murray, softball: Murray coordinated outreach activities for the softball team, which through her leadership has become extremely active in the community. She organizes the team's Champions for Change program, which offers individuals with disabilities the chance to enjoy a special game day experience with the Carolina softball team.
Kate Morris, women's soccer: Morris left her mark in the Chapel Hill community by serving throughout her career at UNC. Any time there was a need for volunteers, she was willing to help and to recruit teammates to join her. Whether at an elementary school or visiting patients at a hospital, she displayed the ability to connect with everyone though her energy and positive spirit.
