Tagg Wins Bronze At Junior Worlds
August 14, 2019 | Wrestling
TALLINN, Estonia — Gabriel Tagg took bronze at the 2019 Junior World Championships after defeating his opponent from Georgia, 15-4 in the bronze medal match on Wednesday morning.
Tagg began his match down 4-0, but used a takedown and turn sequence to work all the way back to a tech fall. His win marks the first student-athlete to become a world medalist in the Coleman Scott era at UNC.
"It was a great experience to go out there and prove that I have what it takes to win on the national level," Tagg said. "There are a lot of people who doubted me, but I know what I need to do to consistently put myself in a position to win. My coaches prepared me well and I worked for this moment. Bronze is great, but I'm ready for more. This is just the start for me."
Tagg will return home to Chapel Hill this week as the Tar Heels are set to begin classes next Wednesday.
