Burnett Leads, UNC 17 Ahead After 36 Holes at Turning Stone
Austin Greaser shot a course record 64, the second-lowest round ever by a Tar Heel freshman, sophomore Ryan Burnett has the lead after 36 holes and the University of North Carolina men's golf team has a 17-shot advantage on the field after Sunday's play at the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate in Verona, N.Y.
The Tar Heels shot 5-under-283 in the first round to trail host Missouri by a single stroke, but blistered the Kalhuyat Course at Turning Stone Resorts in the afternoon with an 18-under-par 270, which tied the second-lowest round (by strokes and score to par) in UNC men's golf history.
Greaser, playing in his first collegiate event, made nine birdies in the second round and shot an 8-under-64. The Vandalia, Ohio, native tied the second-best round ever by a UNC freshman. Greaser shot 71 in the morning and is in second place after 36 holes at 9 under.
Burnett set the Tar Heel freshman record last year with a 63 in the NCAA Regional at Stanford. The Lafayette, Calif., native opened with a 3-under-69, then shot 65 in the second round to lead the field at 10 under par.
Junior Ryan Gerard is seventh at 3 under. He followed a 73 with a 4-under-par 68.
Carolina is 23 under par. Missouri is second at 6 under, Boston College is third (+9), Delaware (+19) is fourth and Sacred Heart is fifth (+27).
UNC's full roster is competing in the tournament. Sophomore Dougie Ergood shot a 67 in the first round as an individual entry and is tied for eighth place at 1 under. Junior Mason Elmore shot a pair of even-par 72s and is tied for 11th place.
Senior Austin Hitt is 13th at 1 over, and freshmen George McNeely and Austin Poole and sophomore Luis Castro are tied for 14th at 2 over. Hitt and McNeely are in the five-man starting lineup with Burnett, Gerard and Greaser.
Monday's third and final round is scheduled for an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
