Tar Heel Women Take Second, Men Third At Cavalier Classic

EARLYSVILLE, Va. – The University of North Carolina cross country teams continued their seasons Saturday at the Cavalier Classic at Panorama Farms. Led by strong showings from Morgan Ilse and Paige Hofstad, the Tar Heel women took second place with 42 points, while the men finished third with 64 points in the five-team meet.
In the five-kilometer women's race, Ilse (17:03.3) and Hofstad (17:09.9) paced the Tar Heels with top-three finishes. Ilse's runner-up performance was just 1.6 seconds behind Tennessee's Katie Thronson, with Hofstad following close behind in third. The pair was joined in the top 10 by senior Erin Edmundson, whose time of 17:42.2 was good for eighth place. Freshmen Lizzy Harding (18:01.0) and Alex Morris (18:06.4) both placed in the top 15 to finish out the scoring for the Tar Heels.
The Carolina women finished with 42 points, finishing second to Tennessee's 36-point effort. Of the nine Carolina competitors, three women finished the race with new cross country 5K personal records.
On the men's side, senior Jeremy Brown (23:31.5), senior Matt Thornton (24:40.0) and redshirt junior Mitch Resor (24:45.9) all finished in the top 15 to lead Carolina. Sophomore John Tatter and redshirt junior Alex Milligan, whose times of 25:03.0 and 25:13.5 were good for 19th and 22nd place respectively, rounded out the scorers for UNC. Of the 11 Tar Heel men competing Saturday, three came away from the meet with new personal records over the 8K distance.
