Cernoch Advances At First Day Of Gamecock Fall Invitational

Columbia, S.C.—Brian Cernoch led a strong effort for the University of North Carolina on Friday at the 2019 Gamecock Fall Invitational hosted by the University of South Carolina.
Seeded fourth in his flight, Cernoch won a pair of matches on Friday to reach Saturday's 1 p.m. semifinal match against second-seeded Daniel Rodrigues of USC. Cernoch opened play with a 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 win over Matthew Thomson, then beat Benjamin Hannestad of Miami, 7-6 (0), 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
Josh Peck also was seeded fourth in his flight. He won his first match, coming back to beat Cleeve Harper of Texas, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2, after losing the first set. Peck dropped his quarterfinal match to Florida State's Zdenek Derkas, losing 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (retired). Peck will meet Miami's Francisco Bastias on Saturday.
Tar Heels Mac Kiger and Simon Soendergaard both lost a pair of matches on Friday in singles play. They will face each other on Saturday afternoon.
Kiger and Soendergaard also will team up in doubles play in their first match on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. against Angus Bradshaw and Zdenek Derkas of FSU. Cernoch and Peck also will begin doubles play together at 9 a.m. on Saturday against Nicaise Muamba and Josh Wilson.
Meanwhile in Arkansas, freshman Rinky Hijikata has advanced to the semifinals of the ITF Fayetteville Futures. He beat Ivailo Keremedchiev 6-2, 6-2 on Friday evening to advance to the semis.
