Current Student-Athletes
September 5, 2019 | General
As a student-athlete, there are several NCAA, ACC and institutional rules and regulations of which you should be aware. Student-athletes may review compliance forms, rules and regulations, and additional institutional resources by logging into their student-athlete accounts in Front Rush or Teamworks. Please contact the Athletic Compliance Office if you ever have questions or concerns regarding rules and regulations.

Extra Benefits
An extra benefit is any special arrangement by an institutional employee or representative of the institution's athletics interests (booster) to provide a student-athlete or the student-athlete family member or friend a benefit not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation. Receipt of a benefit by student-athletes or their family members or friends is not a violation of NCAA legislation if it is demonstrated that the same benefit is generally available to the institution's general student body or their family members or friends or to a particular segment of the student body (e.g., international students, minority students) determined on a basis unrelated to athletics ability.
It is an NCAA violation for a student-athlete to receive something that is not generally available to the Carolina student body. Student-athletes should not accept transportation, payment of food or drink, or any other benefit from someone who is not an established friend or family member.
Extra benefits can include, but, are not limited to:
Impermissible Benefits
NCAA legislation specifically defines and categorizes different types of impermissible benefits (e.g., extra benefits, recruiting inducements, and preferential treatment). Regardless of the type of impermissible benefit, however, the prohibition is generally the same: under most circumstances, prospective and enrolled student-athletes (along with their friends and families) cannot receive goods or services based on their status as athletes. In addition to the extra benefit prohibitions, the following are categories of benefits the NCAA prohibits boosters or representative of the institution's athletics interests from providing (not an exhaustive list):
o Cash and cost-free goods and services;
o Special discounts, payment arrangements, or credit options for products or services if the same are not available to all Carolina students;
o Preferential treatment, benefits, or services based on a student-athlete's athletics reputation, skill, or pay-back potential as a future professional athlete;
o Payment for work not performed or at unreasonable levels; and
o The purchase of items or services from student-athletes or their relatives at inflated prices.
Prospective and enrolled student-athletes who receive such benefits jeopardize their eligibility to compete in intercollegiate athletics. Additionally, the Carolina may be subject to additional penalties by the NCAA.
