Harvey Pulls Off Big Upset In Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS - The first day of the 2020 Freeman Memorial Tennis Championship saw North Carolina freshman Kacie Harvey pull a huge upset over the second seed in the singles field on Friday from the Fertitta Tennis Complex at UNLV.Â
Harvey, a rookie from Braintree, Mass., knocked off No. 16 Lisa Marie Rioux, 6-3, 6-3, in the Round of 16 for her first win over a ranked opponent with the Tar Heels. Harvey improves to 7-1 having won her last six singles matches dating back to November.Â
Senior Makenna Jones and junior Alle Sanford advance to the quarterfinals in both the singles and doubles draw. Jones earned a pair of straight set wins to reach the quarterfinals in singles, while No. 36 Sanford defeated Stanford's Nicole Mossmer in the second round, 6-2, 6-2.Â
Jones and Sanford had a bye in doubles and will face Oklahoma State's Alana Wolfberg and Dariva Detkovskaya in the quarters on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET.Â
Immediately following doubles action, singles gets back underway with quarterfinal and semifinal rounds to follow.Â
