CHAPEL HILL—The University of North Carolina men's tennis program is excited to welcome blue-chip student-athlete Christopher Li to the Tar Heel program, head coach Sam Paul announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Li, a native of Lima, Peru, has signed a National Letter of Intent to enroll at UNC beginning in the fall of 2021. He has played tennis at the highest level both nationally and internationally throughout his junior career.
"We are very excited to welcome Christopher to the tennis family at the University of North Carolina," Paul said. "He's a gifted player, and his character, skills and work ethic are a good match with our team culture. We look forward to working with him soon to help maximize his academic, tennis and post-graduate career goals."
Li was ranked No. 1 in Peru in each of his age categories as a younger player, eventually working his way up to a No. 1 ranking in all of South America and No. 175 in the world at the age of 15. In 2018, he was the singles champion in three ITF J5 tournaments and doubles champion in one J5 event. He won his first ITF tournament in the spring of 2020 at the J5 tournament in Santa Cruz, Calif., before the coronavirus shut down the season.
