Heeloween Regatta at University Lake
November 5, 2020 | Women's Rowing
CHAPEL HILL – With Halloween falling on Carolina Rowing's intrasquad race day, it was only fitting that the two were combined for a Heel-oween Regatta at University Lake.

The Tar Heels began the day with a costume contest organized by pods before a series of three, 750-meter races based on boat class.
The costume contest featured Tiger King, Teletubies, the Tar Heels' second year athletic trainer, Kou Yang, pigs, coaches/administration and the winners, green Gatorade bottles.
After determining the costume contest winner, the Carolina rowers took to the water for a series of races based on boat class, competing for trophies named after the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta.
Sophomore Ranait Fitzgerald won the 1x for the Princess Royal Challenge Cup. The pair of Sarah Catherine Niles and Hannah Davis won the 2- Hambleden Pairs Challenge Cup while Jessica Judge and Natalie Timinskas claimed the 2x title, earning the Stonor Challenge Trophy. Coxswained by Claire Traylor, Nicole Van Liew, Kate Burgess, Jackie Wilhelm and Meagan Harrington earned the 4+ title for the Town Challenge Cup.
"This has been a unique and challenging fall semester," interim co-head coach Thomas Revelle said. "We have not been able to race or train in eights, and our team has been separated into smaller groups in order to mitigate some COVID risks. On Halloween, we were able to come together as an entire team (while following safety protocols) and have an intrasquad race day and costume contest. We had a crisp, beautiful morning for racing and it was exciting to see boats line up and have some competitive pieces. I was pleased with the quality of our rowing, and some of our younger rowers proved they are ready to step up and push the upperclassmen. This competitive atmosphere is going to make us better as a team and I think we are all ready for more racing opportunities this spring. On top of the racing, it was nice to be able to get together as an entire group, have some fun with costumes, candy, and Brandwein's Bagels, and have a morning with some semblance of normalcy."
The Tar Heels wrap up fall practice on Nov. 10 before finals and will begin training again in the spring semester. Check GoHeels.com for the spring schedule as it is released.
