Tar Heels Celebrate National Girls And Women In Sports Day

Each year since its inception in 1987, National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) has been a special day to recognize women's sports.
But over time, it's evolved into an event to acknowledge the accomplishments of female athletes, the positive influence of sports participation and the continuing struggle for equality for women in sports.
North Carolina has done its part to promote those messages, hosting its own celebration of NGWSD each of the last eight years. This year's event was held on Jan. 19, when more than 1,000 people flocked to the indoor practice facility to learn from UNC's female student-athletes about their respective sports.
During a 90-minute session, members of the women's basketball, cross country, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, track and field, and volleyball teams demonstrated various aspects of their sports at individual stations set up throughout the massive facility. The only Tar Heel women's team unable to participate was tennis, which was competing in Las Vegas.
Over the course of the event, GoHeels.com spoke with the point people for all 14 teams represented about how they started playing their sport. Here's a look at what they had to say this Wednesday, Feb. 5, as NGWSD is recognized across all 50 states.
