Adam Cottrell to Join Carolina Rowing Staff
March 5, 2020 | Women's Rowing
CHAPEL HILL – Carolina Rowing is excited to announce the addition of assistant coach Adam Cottrell the Tar Heels' coaching staff this spring.
Â
"We are thrilled to have Adam join our coaching staff," interim co-head coach Thomas Revelle said. "We have a long history of rowing and coaching together, and adding him to the staff will help us achieve our team goals for the spring. Adam is passionate about both Carolina and the sport of rowing, and his familiarity with our program will help with an easy mid-season onboarding. The benefit of having another coach on the water will be immense. As a staff, we will be able to dedicate more individual attention to each rower, and Adam will also bring a fresh perspective to what we are currently doing."
Â
"I'm excited to nearly seamlessly add Adam to our coaching staff," interim co-head coach Emilie Gross said. "He is going to mesh well and we are going to give a great student-athlete experience to our entire team now that we are more fully equipped. I'm pumped to add Adam to the team and ready to push into race season!"
Â
A former Carolina men's club rowing coach and student-athlete, Cottrell joins the Tar Heels with nearly two decades of coaching and rowing experience. As the head coach of the men's squad for four seasons, Cottrell guided both the varsity and novice 4+s to the 2011 American Collegiate Rowing Association (ACRA) championship. He also led the varsity and JV 8+s from the ACRA C-finals in 2008 to A-finals in 2013. Cottrell also served as an assistant coach for the men's team, leading boats to medalist finishes at several well-known regattas in the southeast.
Â
"I've been involved with rowing at UNC for almost two decades, either as an athlete, coach or alumni," Cottrell said. "Rowing allowed me to become who I am today, because of the nature of the sport and the impact my coaches had on me. Because of them, I graduated from Carolina with the confidence that no matter what was asked of me, I could give it my all to succeed. I want to help this season's team continue to build that same belief in themselves. Rowing was hugely important to me during my college career, and I would like to do whatever I can to let it be an equally positive experience to the current student-athletes. I feel indescribably lucky to be part of the coaching staff this spring. Many thanks to all who worked to bring me on board, especially to the current coaches and athletic administration."
Â
Aside from Carolina, Cottrell served as head coach and program manager for Cascadilla Boat Club in Ithaca, New York for two seasons. Upon graduation from Carolina, Cottrell spent time as an assistant coach at Marietta College and the Anchorage Rowing Club. Cottrell earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physics from North Carolina in 2006 and a Master of Arts in Teaching in Secondary Science in 2007. Cottrell has 13 years of teaching experience at the elementary and high school levels.
