Four Student-Athletes Honored with Chancellor's Awards

Katie Hoeg, a senior on the North Carolina women's lacrosse team, has been selected as the winner of this year's Jim Tatum Memorial Award, an honor that goes each year to one outstanding UNC student-athlete "who has performed with distinction in his or her sport and who has contributed to the University community through constructive participation in co-curricular activities."
Hoeg was one of four student-athletes honored as the 2019-20 Chancellor's Awards were announced online on Thursday. The only campus-wide student recognition program at Carolina, the event is held on campus each spring.

Hoeg, a biology major from Mattituck, N.Y., become UNC's all-time points leader on March 9. In addition to the Tatum Award on Thursday, she was announced as the winner of the 2019-20 Rammy Award for Record-Breaking Performance. A Phi Beta Kappa inductee, she serves as a team captain and shared national player of the year honors for 2020.
Greene is an exercise and sport science major from Ponte Vedra, Fla., and was a four-year member of the UNC track and field team, last competing for the Tar Heels during the 2018-19 season. She won the 2018 NCAA Championship in the indoor high jump.
Smith is a computer science major from Clemmons, N.C. A Phi Beta Kappa inductee, she competed for the Tar Heels in cross country and indoor and outdoor track & field.
Wright is working toward double major in women and gender studies and in Spanish literature and culture. The team's Athletic Director's Scholar-Athlete, he competed in epee for the Tar Heels.

THE JIM TATUM MEMORIAL AWARD: Katie Hoeg
This award was established in 1959 in honor of James M. Tatum, head football coach in 1942 and 1956 through 1958. It is presented under the sponsorship of The University of North Carolina Athletic Association to the varsity intercollegiate athlete who has performed with distinction in his or her sport and who has contributed to the University community through constructive participation in co-curricular activities.
THE PATRICK F. EAREY AWARD: Nicole Greene
Established by the Department of Exercise and Sport Science, the award honors the late Patrick Earey, a distinguished member of its faculty. Dr. Earey taught in the department from 1957 to 1987 and served as varsity swim coach from 1957 to 1975. This award is given to a member of the graduating class who has exhibited outstanding academic achievement, extracurricular involvement, and leadership. The recipient is selected by a committee of faculty members and students from the department.
THE IRENE F. LEE AWARD: Ashley Smith
Irene F. Lee, who served as hostess and counselor in Cornelia Phillips Spencer Hall from 1925 to 1948, established this award in 1955. The award is presented annually to the woman of the senior class who is judged most outstanding in leadership, character and scholarship.
THE STERLING A. STOUDEMIRE AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN SPANISH: Ezra Wright
This certificate and monetary prize are awarded annually to a senior who has excelled in Spanish. It was established in 1974 by friends and former students of Sterling Aubrey Stoudemire in recognition of his fifty years as a teacher of Spanish and other services to the University, including Chair of the Department of Romance Languages and Chairman of the Faculty Committee on Buildings and Grounds.
THE MARY TURNER LANE AWARD IN WOMEN'S AND GENDER STUDIES: Ezra Wright
This award honors a senior, from any discipline, judged by the faculty in the Department of Women's and Gender Studies to have made an outstanding contribution through original scholarship and/or creative production on gender and feminist issues. Its purpose is to further academic research in the expanding field of Women's and Gender Studies, which was established on the campus in 1978 by Mary Turner Lane, a tireless feminist, advocate, and educator.
