Four Tar Heels have been named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Team for fencing, announced Thursday by the league. Seniors Wei Chee Chen and Jackie Litynski were selected for the women's team and sophomores James Mulligan and Beni Rabinowitz were named to the men's team.
Â
The All-ACC Academic honors take into account both athletic and academic performance during the 2019-20 school year.
Â
Chen, a business administration major, earned All-ACC Academic honors for the second time in her career. A foil fencer from Birmingham, Ala., she qualified for 2019 NCAA Championships as a junior.
Â
Litynski, an environmental sciences/public policy double major, earned the honor for the fourth time. A sabre fencer from Niskayuna, N.Y., she also competed at the 2019 NCAA Championships.
Â
Mulligan, an environmental sciences major, was named to the All-ACC Academic team for the first time. He was set to compete in men's foil at the 2020 NCAA Championships.
Â
Rabinowitz, an information science major, earned the academic honor for the second year in a row. He is a two-time NCAA Championships qualifier in men's sabre and finished 13th in 2019. This season, he led UNC at NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regionals with a fourth-place finish. Â
Â
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
