Congratulations to the Class of 2020
May 10, 2020 | General
On the day set aside for Spring Commencement for the UNC Class of 2020, Carolina Athletics honors the student-athletes who have completed their undergraduate degrees this spring and are set to move on to their next challenges, including graduate school, professional sports, and a wide range of career paths.
Â
More than 100 Tar Heel student-athletes became UNC alums on Sunday. Among them are NCAA and Atlantic Coast Conference champions, All-America honorees, Phi Beta Kappa inductees, Dean's List members and campus leaders.
Â
Â
Members of all spring sports teams and some winter sports teams saw their seasons cut short by the Covid-19 crisis. Â With no in-person classes since early March, student-athletes have joined all UNC students in completing the spring semester online.
Â
An in-person commencement ceremony is planned at a yet-to-be-determined date in the future. In the meantime, Sunday is set aside to recognize the hard work of more than 6,000 UNC students completing degrees, including just over 4,000 earning their undergraduate degrees, Tar Heel team members among them.
Â
Â
"It is my honor to congratulate the Class of 2020 graduates among Carolina's 28 varsity teams," said Robert A. Blouin, UNC's Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost. "The current global health crisis has presented many challenges to the University over these past few months, not the least of which is the loss of camaraderie and community due to the cancellation of all intercollegiate competitions. On a personal level, especially for our graduating seniors, the loss of the spring athletics season has been deeply upsetting. Yet the members of our athletic teams have shown great resilience and continue to shine, both as outstanding students, athletes, and especially as friends and teammates.
Â
"To the Class of 2020: the connections you have made during your time here will last long after this difficult semester ends and you make your way into the world as graduates of the country's greatest public university. Today, and always, UNC celebrates all that you have accomplished. Thank you for your hard work and commitment in the classroom, to your team, and to your university. You inspire us, especially during these difficult times. Congratulations and Go Heels!"

We couldn't hold a #UNCgrad celebration without the @clefhangers — even during an online watch party. Get ready to go to Carolina in your mind, #UNC20 🥺 pic.twitter.com/aOyFKlKGHX
