May 25, 2020 | Men's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL—The University of North Carolina's William Blumberg is the 2020 men's Intercollegiate Tennis Association Senior Player of the Year, the ITA announced on Monday.Â
Blumberg is one of just three men's players in ITA history to be an eight-time All-America. He earned All-America accolades in in both singles and doubles in all four of his seasons at Carolina. He joins John-Patrick Smith (2008-11) of Tennessee and Rick Leach (1984-87) of USC as the only eight-time All-Americas in ITA history.
Last week, Blumberg won the Carolina Regional ITA Senior Player of the Year award. He is the third Tar Heel to win the national Senior Player of the Year award, joining Raian Luchici (2006) and Ronnie Schneider (2017). As a freshman in 2017, Blumberg won the national ITA Rookie of the Year award after becoming the first UNC player to reach the NCAA singles final.
"I've said it before, but William is one of the greatest players ever," UNC head coach Sam Paul says. "His hard work is evident, and I'm so proud of everything he continues to accomplish. The accolades he's earned are well deserved."
Blumberg was a perfect 10-0 in singles dual matches this spring, winning all those matches while only dropping one set all season. He also teamed with Brian Cernoch in doubles to go 10-2 in dual matches.
Blumberg joins Freddie McNair (1970-71-72-73) as the only UNC players to earn All-America honors in four seasons.
Â
"For William to be an eight-time All-America is just phenomenal, especially since he didn't compete in the fall and had to work his way up the rankings in just a few weeks," Paul said. "It shows why I've been saying he might be the best player in Carolina history."
