Max Shaw Talks Freshman Season, Future In Chapel Hill
June 2, 2020 | Wrestling
Last year as a part of Carolina Wrestling's freshman class, Pennsylvania native Max Shaw put together a strong first-year performance that puts him in a position to be a young wrestler to watch in the near future in Chapel Hill.
Â
Shaw, a football and wrestling standout from Thomas Jefferson High School in Jefferson Hills, Pennsylvania, placed in four open tournaments last season. He won the Newberry Open and Pembroke Classic at 184 pounds, while picking up three wins at the National Collegiate Open to finish fourth. He opened the season with a third-place (fresh/soph.) finish at the Hokie Open.
Â
This week, Shaw sat down with GoHeels.com to discuss last season and his future as a Tar Heel.
Â
GoHeels: Can you describe your first year in the Carolina program and what your freshman year was like?
Â
Max Shaw: Carolina's program has already provided me with experiences, lessons, and friendships I wouldn't trade for the world. Â My freshman year has brought me up to the Tar Heel standard, and I couldn't be more excited to keep improving with my teammates moving forward.
Â
GH: What were the biggest differences you noticed in the transition from high school to college?
Â
MS: I would say the two biggest differences for a student jumping from high school to college is the need for extended time management and more discipline. Those enhanced traits help so much in developing a structured schedule.
Â
GH: How would you describe the team culture at Carolina?
Â
MS: The team culture at UNC is what truly got me to commit. I'll admit the school checked a lot of boxes, but the most important one is that I felt comfortable and involved in something bigger than myself.
Â
GH: When you look ahead to the 2020-21 season, what are your goals and what are you looking forward to most?
Â
MS: I look at the 2020-21 season as an opportunity to exceed my potential and provide for my team as much as I can. Â I want to be a top competitor in my division while competing for one of the top teams in the nation.
Â
GH: What have you been doing this offseason to stay active and ready to wrestle?
Â
MS: I've been working hard on developing my physical strength this offseason. Keeping a positive outlook on the future and improving my skills every day is what I feel will have me best ready to wrestle.
