Third Tar Heel to Win in Last Seven Years
University of North Carolina freshman Peter Fountain made a 4-footer for par on the 72nd hole to force a playoff and won the extra hole with another par to capture the 2020 North Carolina Amateur Sunday at the North Ridge Country Club in Raleigh.
Fountain, a Raleigh native, shot 68 in the fourth round to finish 72 holes of regulation play at 9 under 271 (69-70-64-68). He entered the playoff tied with Jonathan Brightwell of Charlotte, who shot a final-round 66.
Fountain had a two-stroke advantage with two holes to play. Fountain made a bogey on the 17th hole and Brightwell birdied the par-4 18th to tie.
Fountain is third Tar Heel to win the North Carolina Amateur in the last seven years – Joshua Martin won in 2014 and Carter Jenkins won a year later.
" To win this title means a lot, especially it being in my home town of Raleigh," says Fountain. "It gives me lots of confidence going into the rest of my summer schedule."

"I knew I probably had to get up and down (on 18 in regulation) after the crowd started clapping for Jonathan when he made a putt," says Fountain. "I just had to trust my stroke and all the preparation I had put in. In the playoff, Jonathan got a tough break where his tee shot ended up, so I played a bit more conservative and forced him to have to get up and down for par. I didn't want to get too aggressive and make a crucial error."
UNC junior Mason Elmore tied for 30th place at 8 over 288. Elmore shot a 67 in Saturday's third round.Fountain is third Tar Heel to win the North Carolina Amateur in the last seven years – Joshua Martin won in 2014 and Carter Jenkins won a year later.
