Freshman Birdied Six of Last 10 Holes to Win
University of North Carolina freshman Austin Greaser made six birdies in his last 10 holes to shoot a final-round 65 to win the Northern Kentucky Amateur Championship Thursday at the Lassing Point Golf Course.
Greaser shot 68-70-65 to finish with a 10-under-par 203 to win the event by six strokes over Ty Gingerich. Greaser was the only player in the field to shoot under par in all three rounds and was one of three competitors under par over 54 holes.
The Vandalia, Ohio, native was a freshman in 2019-20 for the Tar Heels and has four years of eligibility remaining at UNC. He had two top-10 performances, including second place at the Turning Stone Invitational in Verona, N.Y., in his collegiate debut, and sixth at Notre Dame.
Greaser had a one-stroke lead entering today's third round and was even in his round through eight holes after making two birdies and two bogeys. He then closed out front side with a birdie on the par-4 ninth hole, extended his lead with birdies on 12, 13, 14 and 15 and capped the triumph with a birdie 3 on the 18th hole.
"It felt amazing to compete," says Greaser. "I missed the adrenaline rush, the nerves and feelings of competition. My mindset was to win and separate myself from the field as much as I could. I've been working hard lately and trusted the work and preparation I'd put in. Every swing I was committed and believed in my ability.
Greaser described some of the changes that tournament organizers employed due to the coronavirus.
"They are encouraging the pin to be kept in," he says. "There were no pin sheets; they were sent to you on your phone. We also didn't keep a scorecard. One player in each group kept live scoring on their phone.
"I'm really happy to begin the year this way with my first tournament. Obviously, there are lots of positives to build on and take with me throughout the summer. I'm looking forward to the rest of the summer events and getting back to UNC."
