Walker to Compete at US Women’s Amateur

CHAPEL HILL – Coming off a third-place finish at the Donna Andrews Invitational in June, returning senior Brynn Walker is set to compete at the 120th U.S. Women's Amateur at the 6,561-yard, par-72 Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland August 3-9.
Paired with Duke's Megan Furtney and Notre Dame's Lauren Beaudreau, Walker begins the 36 holes of stroke play on Monday at 11 a.m. from the first hole and continues with the second round at 7 a.m. Tuesday. There will be six rounds of match play at Woodmont, starting Aug. 5. The championship is scheduled to conclude with a 36-hole final on Sunday, Aug. 9, beginning at 7:30 a.m.
"I've been working with my coach at home," Walker said, "and playing the course here in St. David's, Pa. to get ready for next week, but also cautious not wear myself out because it's a long week. I've been trying to keep things similar to what I normally do while also going out in the evenings around sunset when it's not as hot."
Making her 10th appearance at a USGA championship, Walker is making her third straight and fifth overall appearance at the U.S. Women's Amateur. She is also one of 49 who played in the 2019 event in West Point, Mississippi where she advanced to the Round of 32 – qualifying her for the 2020 event due to COVID-19 exemptions.
"I was so excited because I didn't know if I'd have another chance at it," Walker said. "When they announced that they weren't having any qualifiers, I was pretty bummed. I thought there'd be a chance to get in with how I finished last year. I was just excited because this is almost like a bonus opportunity that I wasn't expecting."
Walker will be joined by her father, Rock Walker, as her caddy for the fifth time at the U.S. Women's Amateur.
"My dad has been my caddy each time," Walker said. "It's been fun for us to do. I grew up playing with him after work every day so he knows my game pretty well. To do it, now when I'm older is pretty fun since we don't get as much time together anymore."
Because of health concerns due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year's 132-player field will be comprised of exempt players based on a variety of exemption categories, including the winners and runners-up in three national amateur competitions being conducted in July: the North & South Women's Amateur, Women's Western Amateur and Ladies National Amateur. The remaining spots are being filled from the Women's World Amateur Golf Ranking® (WAGR®). Walker earned her spot in the 2020 field due to finishing in the Round of 32 in 2019.
"My goals are more process-oreinted," Walker said. "As long as I give it everything I have and just leave it all on the course, then I'll walk away pretty happy. I don't want to hold anything back because this is a great opportunity that I didn't think I would have."
