McNeely Shoots 66 in First Round at Elon

University of North Carolina junior George McNeely shot a career-best 66 in the opening round and senior Dougie Ergood shot 70-69 in his two rounds Monday at the Elon Phoenix Invitational.

The tournament is being played at the Alamance Country Club in Burlington.

Carolina has four players competing in the tournament as individual entries. Ergood is tied for 17th place at 3 under par, eight shots behind the leader, Pedro Rabadan of Elon.

McNeely made seven birdies in his opening round and is tied for 22nd at 2 under (66-74–140), Kenan Poole is tied for 24th at 1 under (71-70–141) and Ryan Smith is tied for 58th at 6 over.

The third and final round is scheduled for Tuesday.
