Wake Forest's Kuehn Sets Tourney Record
Wake Forest's Rachel Kuehn set the 18-hole tournament record with a 63 Saturday to lead the Demon Deacons to the top of the leader board after two rounds of play at the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational at UNC Finley Golf Course.
Kuehn made nine birdies without a bogey to shoot 9 under par. Her 63 broke the previous tournament record 64, which Michigan State's Paz Marfa set in 2017. The Tar Heel Invitational has been played since 1976.
The Deacons shot 11-under 277 today to take the 36-hole lead by four strokes over round one leader Virginia Tech. Wake Forest is 16 under. The Hokies are second at 12-under 564. Clemson (-11) and Michigan (-6) are third and fourth, respectively, and Vanderbilt, Duke and Alabama are tied for fifth at 3 under.
Krista Junkkari led the host Tar Heels with a second-round 68 and is in fourth place at 6-under 138. Kayla Smith shot 71 and is tied for eighth. Crista Izuzquiza shot 73, Stephany Kim shot 76 and Natalia Aseguinolaza had a 77.
Carolina shot even par today and stands ninth at 1-over 577 (289-288).
Kuehn (70-63–133) leads the 95-player field at 11 under par. Duke's Eric Shepherd (66-70–136) and Clemson's Melena Barrientos (70-66–136) are tied for second at 8 under and Junkkari is fourth, five strokes behind Kuehn.
The third and final round is Sunday with a shotgun start beginning at 8:45 a.m.
